preimplantation genetic diagnosis clinic
A Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) clinic has been established at Monash IVF to provide couples at genetic risk with information relating specifically to the genetic testing component of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).

What is the PGD clinic?

A Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) clinic has been established at Monash IVF to provide couples at genetic risk with information relating specifically to the genetic testing component of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). Couples may be at genetic risk due to:

  • A single gene disorder - caused by an alteration in the DNA sequence that can cause conditions including Cystic Fibrosis, Huntington disease or Fragile X
  • A translocation - a rearrangement or exchange of two chromosome regions that may cause implantation failure, recurrent miscarriage or abnormalities in children
Genetic counseling is an important step to ensure that PGD is the right option for you.

What happens at the clinic?

The PGD clinic is a free service that involves a one-on-one appointment with our clinical geneticist and genetic counsellor.  The appointment will take approximately one hour.  You will be provided with information and have your questions answered in relation to your specific genetic condition and the PGD process.  All PGD requests are considered and blood samples can be arranged so that test development can commence in due course.

Who is involved in the clinic?

The PGD clinic is a team venture between Monash IVF and Genetic Health Services Victoria (GHSV).  Monash IVF has been offering a world-class clinical PGD service since January 2000, with almost 250 babies born and a further 46 ongoing pregnancies (as at May 2009).  Genetic Health Services Victoria provide genetic counseling and support (genetic counselling is mandatory in Victoria for people undertaking IVF for a genetic condition).

How do I make an appointment?

If you are interested in making an appointment or would like further information regarding the PGD clinic at Monash IVF, please contact our genetic counselor on +61 03 9590 8336.
